The programme for the Main Competition of the 17th Gdańsk DocFilm Festival has been finalised. Czwarty dzień 16. GDFF

Przedostatniego dnia 16. GDFF czeka nas moc filmowych atrakcji. O 10.00 odbędzie się projekcja „Miss Holocaust” i telekonferencja z reżyserką, Michaliną Musielak. O 14.00 obejrzymy dokument wybitnego filmoznawcy, profesora Thomasa Elsaessera „Wyspa Słońca”. Po projekcji również odbędzie się spotkanie z reżyserem. Na zakończenie bloku krótkometrażowych filmów fabularnych o 17.30 porozmawiamy z autorką wyświetlanego na koniec „Jest naprawdę ekstra” Katarzyną Warzechą. O 20.15 rozpocznie się pokaz wielokrotnie nagradzanego filmu dokumentalnego „Beksińscy. Album wideofoniczny”, a po nim również spotkamy się z reżyserem, Marcinem Borchardtem. Oprócz tego w Sali Wystaw Czasowych ECS będzie można obejrzeć filmy Kingi Dębskiej, przewodniczącej tegorocznego jury w Konkursie Polskich Krótkometrażowych Filmów Fabularnych. Pokazy rozpoczną się o 16.30 od filmu „Droga, prawda, życie”. Następnie zobaczymy dokumenty „Najbardziej lubię grać” i „Aktorka", a po nich porozmawiamy z reżyserką.

Trzeci dzień 16. GDFF

Za nami już dwa dni festiwalu, ale mamy przed sobą jeszcze cały weekend obfitujący w filmowe atrakcje. Po projekcji dokumentu „Hatsune Miku – Świat należy do mnie” o 14.00 odbędzie się telekonferencja z jego reżyserką Ann Oren. Zwieńczeniem bloku krótkometrażowych polskich filmów fabularnych rozpoczynającego się o 17.30 będzie spotkanie z Filipem Ignatowiczem, reżyserem „Nowego Bronxu”. Równocześnie w Sali wystaw czasowych odbędzie się retrospektywa filmów fabularnych i dokumentalnych Ryszarda Bugajskiego, przewodniczącego jury w Konkursie Polskich Krótkometrażowych Filmów Fabularnych. Pokazy rozpoczną się o 12.30. Zobaczymy dokument „Crazy Horse” oraz filmy fabularne „W kogo ja się wrodziłem” oraz „Zaćma”, po której porozmawiamy z reżyserem oraz odtwórczynią głównej roli w ostatnim filmie, Marią Mamoną.

The screening of ‘Miss Holocaust’ by Michalina Musielak, which had to be rescheduled due to technical problems, as well as a teleconference with the director will be held on Saturday, 9th June at 10.00 AM. We apologize for the inconvenience. Przed nami drugi dzień 16. GDFF. Zobaczymy sześć dokumentów biorących udział w Konkursie Głównym oraz blok pięciu krótkometrażowych polskich filmów fabularnych, które walczą o nagrodę w nowym konkursie. Czekają nas także pierwsze spotkania z twórcami: po projekcji filmu „Gwendolyn” odbędzie się telekonferencja z jego twórczynią, Ruth Kaaserer, a po „A w oddali ujadały psy” o 15.15 porozmawiamy z reżyserem, Simonem Leregiem Wilmontem. Na zakończenie bloku krótkometrażowych polskich filmów fabularnych porozmawiamy z reżyserem filmu „Modus Operandi” Remigiuszem Biernackim oraz jego producentkami Karoliną Galubą i Małgorzatą Małysą. Ostatnim spotkaniem tego dnia będzie rozmowa z reżyserką filmu „Miss Holocaust” Michaliną Musielak oraz jego producentkami, Karoliną Galubą i Małgorzatą Małysą.

Pierwszy dzień 16. edycji Gdańsk DocFilm Festivalu

Pierwszego dnia festiwalu po południu zobaczymy trzy dokumenty biorące udział w Konkursie Głównym: „Pavlensky. Życie obnażone” (reż. Darya Khrenova), „Tak mi dopomóż Bóg” (reż.Jean Libon, Yves Hinant) oraz „Wiosnę smoków” (reż. Jarosław Wszędybył). O 19.00 zapraszamy na uroczyste otwarcie tegorocznej imprezy, a po nim dwa pokazy specjalne. Obejrzymy oscarową krótkometrażową fabułę „The Silent Child” (reż.Chris Overton) oraz film nowelowy „Trzy kroki w szaleństwo” (reż. Federico Fellini, Roger Vadim, Louis Malle) z 1968 roku.

Stulecie Niepodległości Polski i wkład Jana Pawła II w obalenie komunizmu pokażemy w filmach przygotowanych wspólnie z Europejskim Centrum Solidarności. Juries of the festival competitions

In the international documentary Main Competition, the winner will be chosen by a jury composed of its head, Kinga Dębska, as well as its members, Karolina Bielawska and Rick Minnich. The winner film of the first Polish short fiction competition in the festival's history will be selected by another jury, presided by Ryszard Bugajski who will be accompanied by Anna Próchniak and Leszek Starzyński.

Karolina Bielawska

Karolina Bielawska graduated from the Directing studies at the Faculty of Radio and Television at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Additionally, she holds a diploma from Wajda School in Warsaw. Bielawska is a director of fiction school films as well as documentaries which have been presented and awarded during many Polish and foreign festivals. Her last documentary entitled "Call me Marianna" won twenty-seven awards during Polish and foreign festivals like Cracow, Locarno, Barcelona, Tel Aviv, Los Angeles, and Chicago. She was also awarded the Audience Award during the Gdansk DocFilm Festival in 2016.

Kinga Dębska

Head of jury in the international documentary Main Competition  Kinga Dębska graduated from Japanese studies at the University of Warsaw as well as directing studies at Film and Tv School of Performing Arts in Prague. Dębska is also a director, scriptwriter, and author of three feature films. Among them, there is "Hel", a movie awarded for its script during Młodzi i Film festival in Koszalin, another multiple award winning film "These Daughters of Mine", as well as her recent project "Plan B". Furthermore, Kinga Dębska directed more than dozen feature films. "Aktorka", a portrait of Elżbieta Czyżewska was amongst the awarded ones during Eagles festival. She is also wrote the book bestseller "These Daughters of Mine". Her new feature fiction film "Fun, Fun" is about to be released soon.

Leszek Starzyński

Leszek Starzyński is a movie editor, producer as well as a member of Polish Film Academy and the Polish Association of Editors. What is more, Starzyński is co-owns a post-production company Monternia.pl and he is its managing director. He is also a co-owner and producer at Iron Films. Starzyński teaches at Gdynia Film School. He was the editor of several Theatre Television productions, TV series and narrative films such as "Silent Night" (dir. Piotr Domalewski), "I'm a Killer" and "Splinters" (dir. Maciej Pieprzyca), and "Courage" (dir. Greg Zgliński). Leszek Starzyński is also a producer of multiple award winning films which include "The Fastest" (dir. Łukasz Palkowski) and two films by Maciej Pieprzyca - "Life feels good" and "I'm a Killer".

Rick Minnich

Rick Minnich is an American independent filmmaker based in Berlin, Germany. His award-winning films include: "Heaven on Earth" (50 min., 2001, IDFA, Fipa d'Or Biarritz), "Homemade Hillbilly Jam" (80 min, 2005, HotDocs, True/False), "Forgetting Dad" (84 min, 2008, IDFA - Special Jury Award, True/False, Full Frame, Hot Docs, Grand Jury Prize - GZ DOC Guangzhou, China, Shortlisted for the German Film Award "Lola"), "The Bomb Hunters" (52 min., 2015). Currently he is working on "The Strait Guys" (about the proposed Bering Strait tunnel project) and "Mr. Greenfield" (about Holocaust survivor and presidential tailor Martin Greenfield).

Ryszard Bugajski

Head of jury in the Polish short fiction competition  Ryszard Bugajski was born on the 27th of April 1943 in Warsaw. He is a Polish movie and TV director, writer and scriptwriter. Bugajski has Philosophy diploma at University of Warsaw and he has completed Directing studies at the Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź which he graduated from in 1973. He was a member of Andrzej Wajda's Zespół Filmowy "X" from the beginning till its very end in 1983. He took his participated in the production of Krzysztof Zanussi's "The Illumination" as an assistant director. Bugajski was also a director of several documentaries, television shows, narrative films and Theatre Television productions. "Interrogation", one of his most controversial productions, was banned from public viewing by the Polish government. After the martial law was introduced, he could not find a job in his profession. As a result, he emigrated to Canada where he worked on TV series and directed the movie "Clearcut". He decided to come back to his homeland permanently in 1997. Bugajski was also a director of several Television Theatre productions including "Taking Sides", "Lost in Yonkers", "Collabo Teddy", "News", "The Professional", and "The Death of Captain Pilecki". He has also published three novels: "Interrogation", "I Confess" and "Salt and Pepper", as well as a book on his controversial movie "Interrogation".

Anna Próchniak

Anna Próchniak is a graduate of the Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź. She is considered one of the most promising film and theatre actresses of the young generation. At the beginning of her career she was a ballet and contemporary dancer. She was recognized with Best Debut Award during "Pierwszy Kontakt" festival and Best Acting Duo (together with Joanna Osyda) during "Kolada - Plays" festival in Jekaterynburg for her role in the play "Marzenie Nataszy" of Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw. Her debut as a movie actress was the part of Irmina in "Shameless" for which she was nominated for Golden Duck award. Furthermore, she also received many awards for her role as Kama in "Warsaw 44" (dir. by Jan Komasa), including Elle’s Rising Star award during the 39th Gdynia Film Festival, the Piotr Łazarkiewicz Award for young talents during Polish Film Festival in Los Angeles and a nomination to the Zbyszek Cybulski Award. What is more, got a part in Anne Fontaine’s movie entitled "The Innocents" (which got an Oscar nomination) with a premiere during Sundance festival in 2016 as well as in an Irish film "Bad Day For the Cut" (dir. by Chris Baugh), having been firstly shown during Sundance in 2017. The movie, "The Fastest" by Łukasz Palkowski, in which she has played one of the main roles, was highly recognized and got many awards both in Poland and abroad. Two more films in which she appears, "Vultures" (dir. by Börkur Sigthorsson) and "Oleg" (dir. by Juris Kursietis), are about to be released soon.

New competition at Gdańsk DocFilm Festival!

Gdańsk DocFilm is extending its formula and it is introducing another competition at its 16th edition. From this year onwards, the documentary festival will also present and award Polish short fiction films. The new competition will add variety to the festival programme and familiarize Gdańsk DocFilm Festival's audience with the work of short fiction film makers.

Przemysław Kamiński - A cameraman who was born on 19th March 1970 in Wrocław. A graduate of cinematography and photography studies at the Faculty of Radio and Television at the Silesian University in Katowice. The director of photography for Marek Lechki’s films “My city” and “Erratum” or Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s - “Aria Diva”. He also cooperated with Marcin Koszałka on his films. “The Gift” is his directorial debut.

Q&A with the director Tal Amiran after the screening Tal Amiran is an award winning filmmaker based in London, UK. His work includes documentaries and moving image art work. Tal’s debut short documentary film Seven Days a Week, has been selected for over 25 film festivals internationally, winning Best Short Film at London Short Film Festival 2016, Best Documentary at PAMA, Paris, Best Documentary at Kurz Film Festival, Germany, and Winner of Shooting People’s Film of the Month. Seven Days a Week has also been acquired by the BFI National Archive. Tal graduated with a First Class Degree in Fine Art (New Media) from Chelsea College of Art in London, and is also a lecturer in Film and Moving Image Production BA course at Norwich University of the Arts, UK.

Q&A with the director Agnieszka Elbanowska after the film Agnieszka Elbanowska - director, editor and photographer. She graduated from the University of Warsaw's Italian Department, from the History, Theory and Criticism of Cinema and Audiovisual Department of the Roma Tre University, from the Academy of Film and Television in Warsaw, and from the Wajda School. She has collaborated with Polish Television, and has co-created documentary films for TVP Polonia ("Liberta", "Prelude"). Her latest film, “The Love Equation of Henry Fast” was awarded on national and international festivals.

Thursdat | 1st JUNE | ECS 4:00 PM – Communion | Poland | dir. Anna Zamecka | 2016 | 72 min. Q&A with the director, Anna Zamecka after the film Anna Zamecka - Polish director. She lives and works in Warsaw. She studied Journalism, Anthropology and Photography in Warsaw and Copenhagen. Her full-length debut „Communion” received Grand Prix of Semaine de la Critique at 69th Locarno Film Festival and the Polish Academy Award Eagle 2016 for Best Documentary.

Martina Parenti Martina Parenti was born in 1972 in Milan. An Italian documentary maker who has worked on documentaries together with Massimo D'Anolfi for 10 years. The author of awarded and documentaries which have been appreciated at many renowned film festivals (in Locarno, Toronto, Los Angeles, Venice, Berlin): I promessi sposi (The Betrothed) (2007), Grandi Speranze (Great Expectations) (2009), Il Castello (The castle) (2011), Materia oscura (Dark Matter) (2013), L’Infinita fabbrica del Duomo (2015), Spira Mirabilis (2016).

Michał Oleszczyk

Michał Oleszczyk Born in 1982 in Tarnowskie Góry. Graduate of the Jagiellonian University's Institute of Audiovisual Arts. Film critic and a translator, assistant professor at the Faculty of Artes Libertates at the University of Warsaw. His articles have been published in many Polish and foreign periodicals. The author of The Bitterness of Exile. Terence Davies's Cinema book and co-author of tens of publications on film. In 2013-16,the Artistic Director of Gdynia Film Festival.
